Eli Stone fans are distraught that ABC canceled the show after this, its second season, with most blaming the network for failing to stand by it despite falling ratings. Their dismay is understandable; it might not have deserved a renewal (it could not capitalize on the fact that its lead-in was the blockbuster Dancing with the Stars), but these 13 episodes (on three discs) are just about as engaging, provocative, and simply entertaining as the first season’s were. As the season begins, San Francisco lawyer Eli Stone (Jonny Lee Miller) is recovering from surgery to remove the brain aneurysm that was apparently responsible for the strange and prophetic visions that dogged him (and helped him save innocent folks from impending disasters) last year. But when he realizes that his doctor brother (Matt Letscher) has inherited the aneurysm, and the visions, instead, Eli arranges to get them back (this show is about nothing if not suspension of disbelief). Big Love: The Complete Second Season

Early on in Big Love’s second season, closeted polygamist Bill Henrickson’s kids come to him with a broken toy. “I can fix anything,” he reassures them. If only his chaotic life were as easy to mend. Among the crises vying for his attention this season are finding out who was responsible for outing his wife, Barbara (Jeanne Tripplehorn), at the Mother of the Year ceremony; the investigation into the poisoning of his brother-in-law, Alby, for which he could be implicated in a cover-up; negotiating a deal to purchase a gaming company coveted by Roman (Harry Dean Stanton); and, in a “holy spirit sucker punch,” meeting Ana (Branca Katic), a Serbian waitress who just could be wife No. 4. A Golden Globe nominee for Best Drama, Big Love further draws viewers into the polygamists’ shadow world. “If they could show just one normal plural family for a change,” someone remarks at one point. Grounded in “the principle,” the Henrickson households are about as normal as yo (more…)

True Blood: The Complete Second Season (HBO Series) [Blu-ray]

True Blood’s second season, with episodes involving a new cast of monsters invading Louisiana swamp town Bon Temps, is notably gorier and more camp than the first season. While thematically the central focus in these 12 exciting episodes still revolves around faith and loyalty, these questions are complicated by displays of pagan ritual and obsession. Though the vampire/human relationship dilemma continues, spearheaded by lovers Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), there is less emphasis on addiction to V, or vampire blood, and more time dedicated to outsiders whose supernatural talents make some episodes feel like superhero battles. Episode 1, “Nothing but the Blood,” sets the gory example with a brutal opening scene in which the local shaman has been eviscerated. While gruesome murders continue throughout the season, we become familiar with a new femme fatale, Maryann Forrester (Michelle Forbes), who hosts bacchanalia, (more…)
