This stunning concert documentary sheds fresh light on U2′s controversial 1997 Popmart tour, the Irish rockers’ gaudy, epic trek in support of their electronica-edged Pop album. Mixed reactions to the pulsing, dance friendly music on Pop and disappointing ticket sales to stateside Popmart shows were interpreted as evidence that the band’s new sound and look were merely opportunistic. Yet one need only view Popmart Live alongside the Rolling Stones’ contemporaneous Bridges to Babylon 1998 long-form video to grasp U2′s underlying passion and conviction. While Popmart trumps the Stones (ringmasters of the original rock & roll circus and among the principal inventors of stadium rock) in terms of sheer scale, U2′s presentation still strikes thematic sparks missing from the Stones’ more conservative designs for the Bridges stage. U2′s PopMart Live from Mexico City is released on DVD for the first time on September 18th in two formats, a Special Limited Edition 2-DVD Deluxe Packaging version and a single disc, Standard version. Described as a sci-fi disco supermarket, the PopMart Tour opened in its “spiritual home”, Las Vegas on April 25, 1997. Celebrating the 35th anniversary of the spectacular Wall of Sound, we invite you on a sonic excursion into back-to-back shows from June of ’74. Propelled by the heart-thumping power of the Wall, these shows capture the band during a period of heightened intensity and brilliant musicianship.
Disc one finds the Wall of Sound towering over the State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa for a Thursday, June 16th show that’s loaded with beautifully inventive jams and inspired transitions. Amazing moments abound, like the 29-minute odyssey of “Playing In The Band” that blissfully dives into space and brings us back again. Disc two picks up two days later at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky. This legendary setlist includes a brain-melting jam that rolls from “Weather Report Suite” through “It’s A Sin.”

Valentine’s Day, 1968 in San Francisco’s legendary Carousel Ballroom was an extraordinary experience, and it’s all captured here – as the first complete show in the Road Trips series. Thanks to a trusty 8-track tape machine, we can enjoy this magical performance that catches the band at a pivotal moment in the exploration of their own sound. It was a night where the band tried out all their newest songs – ones that we now know as classics!
The package includes an essay by Blair Jackson with some amazing anecdotes about Neal Cassady’s powerful impact on the band.
All discs are mastered (in HDCD) by Jeffrey Norman.
