Since the Caribbean’s multifaceted music is usually heard in the U.S. only in such popular forms as reggae and salsa, Manuel and company’s diligent scholarship is much needed. They provide thoughtful descriptions of such overlooked styles as the bachata of the Dominican Republic and the voudou-jazz of Haiti, as well as of the forms of more musically famous islands, such as Jamaica and Trinidad. They discuss such insular cultural manifestations as the salsa vs. merengue conflict in New York City and the Hindu devotional songs of Trinidad’s Indian community. They describe their travels in several rather inaccessible countries, particularly Cuba. They cogently argue how the Caribbean’s historical, political, and social developments shaped its musics. The musical analyses and notation they provide are straightforward enough to interest careful listeners as well as casual fans, and the many helpful discographies throughout the book–not to mention the cool phot (more…)

From Publishers Weekly

This is a challenging and fascinating look at various ways in which popular music from the 1940s to the 1990s represented “anchor moments in the cultural, social and political realms of twentieth-century African American history.” Ramsay, an assistant professor of music at the University of Pennsylvania, notes that this “is not a comprehensive, strictly chronological study”; he also uses a wide range of source material including family narratives, recordings, live concerts and films. But his sophisticated understanding of current ethnological, musicological, literary and historical theories-as well as a clear and engaging writing style remarkably free of theoretical jargon-explores a central theme: the “subjective understanding of black music as shaped continually by community sensibilities.” Through nuanced looks at such musical artists as Dinah Washington and Dizzy Gillespie, Ramsay shows not only that their work displays a wide range of express (more…)

Indie rock music burst onto the scene in the early ’80s with bands like Sonic Youth. A decade later, the music of Pavement, Guided By Voices, and Radiohead brought tons of new converts. Today, indie rock has exploded across all media, from popular TV shows such as The O.C. to numerous commercials and sold-out stadium tours. The poetry and stories in REVOLUTION ON CANVAS, VOLUME 2 range from the hysterically funny to the achingly sad and are written by the biggest names in indie rock today. The Deftones, Fall Out Boy, Armor for Sleep, Motion City Soundtrack, Atreyu, and A Static Lullaby are just some of the bands included in the second installment of this extraordinary and fascinating series.

2008 three CD set. Decades before the Hip Hop community brought the words ‘mix tape’ to a whole new level, Post-Punk, New Wave and Alternative music fans were making each other mix tapes in hopes of sharing the sounds of their latest musical purchases. As their collections grew, the mix tapes became more diverse and exciting.
This stunning concert documentary sheds fresh light on U2′s controversial 1997 Popmart tour, the Irish rockers’ gaudy, epic trek in support of their electronica-edged Pop album. Mixed reactions to the pulsing, dance friendly music on Pop and disappointing ticket sales to stateside Popmart shows were interpreted as evidence that the band’s new sound and look were merely opportunistic. Yet one need only view Popmart Live alongside the Rolling Stones’ contemporaneous Bridges to Babylon 1998 long-form video to grasp U2′s underlying passion and conviction. While Popmart trumps the Stones (ringmasters of the original rock & roll circus and among the principal inventors of stadium rock) in terms of sheer scale, U2′s presentation still strikes thematic sparks missing from the Stones’ more conservative designs for the Bridges stage. With its vast, ramped stage and enveloping video backdrop, the Popmart set serves the band’s posttechno impulses, yet the music remain (more…)
