Tommy Boy (Holy Schnike Edition) (1995)

Tommy Boy (Holy Schnike Edition)

Amazon.com

The late Chris Farley teams up with his Saturday Night Live pal David Spade for this road comedy about a perpetual screwup, Tommy Callahan Jr. (Farley), who tries to save the auto-parts store owned by his late father (Brian Dennehy). The latter’s dry-witted number cruncher (Spade) reluctantly joins the loud, awkward, but well-meaning Tommy in the mission, which is threatened behind the scenes by his dad’s widow (Bo Derek). The film is sporadically funny, but as with most movies starring TV comics, some vital energy in the stars seems unnaturally suppressed. Still, the film is worth a visit if you want to turn off your brain awhile. –Tom Keogh

U2 – PopMart Live from Mexico City (Limited Edition) (1997)

U2 - PopMart Live from Mexico City (Limited Edition)

Amazon.com

This stunning concert documentary sheds fresh light on U2′s controversial 1997 Popmart tour, the Irish rockers’ gaudy, epic trek in support of their electronica-edged Pop album. Mixed reactions to the pulsing, dance friendly music on Pop and disappointing ticket sales to stateside Popmart shows were interpreted as evidence that the band’s new sound and look were merely opportunistic. Yet one need only view Popmart Live alongside the Rolling Stones’ contemporaneous Bridges to Babylon 1998 long-form video to grasp U2′s underlying passion and conviction. While Popmart trumps the Stones (ringmasters of the original rock & roll circus and among the principal inventors of stadium rock) in terms of sheer scale, U2′s presentation still strikes thematic sparks missing from the Stones’ more conservative designs for the Bridges stage. With its vast, ramped stage and enveloping video backdrop, the Popmart set serves the band’s posttechno impulses, yet the music remain (more…)

Yours, Mine & Ours (Widescreen Edition) (2005)

Yours, Mine & Ours (Widescreen Edition)

Dennis Quaid and Rene Russo, the sexiest adults in Hollywood, anchor Yours, Mine and Ours, an enjoyably traditional family film. Frank Beardsley (Quaid, In Good Company, The Rookie), a Coast Guard admiral, runs his brood of eight kids like a military squad; Helen North (Russo, Tin Cup, Get Shorty), a designer, keeps her multicultural family of ten together with a more free and creative hand. The two run into each other and rekindle their high school romance, getting married before the kids even have a chance to meet. The two families naturally experience a bit of culture clash. After squabbles, disputes, and outright fights, the kids agree on one thing: They have to split up Frank and Helen so they can return to their old lives. Yours, Mine and Ours doesn’t hold any surprises, but after a rushed beginning, the movie settles into a series of brisk, cheerful skirmishes among the kids and some truly sweet interludes between Quaid and Russo, who handle their matu (more…)

How the West Was Won (Three-Disc Special Edition) (1962)

How the West Was Won (Three-Disc Special Edition)

Amazon.com

The first feature film to be photographed and projected in the panoramic three-camera Cinerama process, this epic Western is almost as expansive as the West itself, chronicling a pioneering family’s triumphs and tragedies in numerous episodes spanning three generations and a half century of westward movement. Divided into five segments directed by veteran Hollywood filmmakers Henry Hathaway, George Marshall, and the legendary John Ford (and including uncredited sequences directed by Richard Thorpe), the film was one of the most ambitious ever made by the venerable MGM studio. Its stellar cast reads like a virtual who’s who of Hollywood’s biggest stars. Debbie Reynolds plays a sturdy survivor of many pioneering dangers, and the eventual widow of a gambler (Gregory Peck), who is later reunited with her nephew (George Peppard), a Civil War veteran and cavalryman who heads for San Francisco as the transcontinental railroad is being built. Many more characters and (more…)

Best of Both Worlds Concert: The 3-D Movie: Extended Edition (2008)

Best of Both Worlds Concert: The 3-D Movie: Extended Edition

Amazon.com

The Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds live concert was a sold-out sensation everywhere it played, and this concert video is the next best thing to being there for all the fans that couldn’t get tickets to attend the concert in person. The movie opens with Miley Cyrus backstage in make-up and hair, warming up with vocal exercises, then cuts to Hannah Montana (her alter ego)’s performance of “Rock Star,” and then back in time to four weeks before her performance when concert rehearsals were just beginning. It runs like a backstage special feature for a while, following Hannah Montana through coaching, choreography scenes with Kenny Ortega, and rehearsal sessions. Then it’s back to concert footage from opening night in St. Louis and all along the tour, seasoned here and there with some fun looks at the concerts’ special effects, quick costume changes, other logistical challenges (Hannah gets dropped during a routine early in the tour), and lots o (more…)

The Polar Express (Widescreen Edition) (2004)

The Polar Express (Widescreen Edition)

Amazon.com

Destined to become a holiday perennial, The Polar Express also heralded a brave new world of all-digital filmmaking. Critics and audiences were divided between those who hailed it as an instant classic that captures the visual splendor and evocative innocence of Chris Van Allsburg’s popular children’s book, and those who felt that the innovative use of “performance capture”–to accurately translate live performances into all-digital characters–was an eerie and not-quite-lifelike distraction from the story’s epic-scale North Pole adventure. In any case it’s a benign, kind-hearted celebration of the yuletide spirit, especially for kids who have almost grown out of their need to believe in Santa Claus. Tom Hanks is the nominal “star” who performs five different computer-generated characters, but it’s the visuals that steal this show, as director Robert Zemeckis indulges his tireless pursuit of technological innovation. No matter how you respond to the many wond (more…)
