Eli Stone: The Complete Second Season

Eli Stone: The Complete Second Season

Amazon.com

Eli Stone fans are distraught that ABC canceled the show after this, its second season, with most blaming the network for failing to stand by it despite falling ratings. Their dismay is understandable; it might not have deserved a renewal (it could not capitalize on the fact that its lead-in was the blockbuster Dancing with the Stars), but these 13 episodes (on three discs) are just about as engaging, provocative, and simply entertaining as the first season’s were. As the season begins, San Francisco lawyer Eli Stone (Jonny Lee Miller) is recovering from surgery to remove the brain aneurysm that was apparently responsible for the strange and prophetic visions that dogged him (and helped him save innocent folks from impending disasters) last year. But when he realizes that his doctor brother (Matt Letscher) has inherited the aneurysm, and the visions, instead, Eli arranges to get them back (this show is about nothing if not suspension of disbelief). Eli Stone: The Complete First Season

Eli Stone: The Complete First Season

Amazon.com

It takes a while for Eli Stone to hit its stride, but when it does (a little past the halfway point in this, its first season, with 13 episodes presented on four discs), this show is engaging, provocative, and flat-out entertaining. Of course, a lot of new series need some time to get themselves together, especially when breathing the rarefied air of high concept; and with its combination of drama (and sentimentality), comedy, special effects, and more, Eli Stone certainly fits that description. As the season kicks off, the eponymous hero (played Jonny Lee Miller, a Brit actor sporting a very convincing American accent) is a stereotypical lawyer, ambitious, materialistic, and snarky, helping his San Francisco firm’s corporate clients fill their coffers at the expense of the poor and downtrodden. But then he has a vision–specifically, George Michael singing “Faith” atop Eli’s coffee table. Many more such hallucinations will follow, including an earthquake, (more…)

Everybody Loves Raymond: The Complete Seventh Season (2002)

Everybody Loves Raymond: The Complete Seventh Season

Amazon.com

The seventh season of Everybody Loves Raymond serves up a delightful mix of comedy and pathos as the Barones deal with cults, theft, marriage, and death. The season opener (which aired on CBS in 2002) starts where season 6 ended: with Debra (Patricia Heaton) and Marie (Doris Roberts) feuding, and Ray (Ray Romano) and Robert (Brad Garrett) conjuring up a plan to get them to make up. This 5-disc set includes all 25 episodes, including the two-part wedding finale between Robert and Amy (Monica Horan). In typical Marie fashion, she has a shocking and inappropriate comment to make when the priest makes the rhetorical statement, “If anyone can think of any reason why these two should not be joined, speak now or forever hold your peace.” There is very little peace when Marie is around. A fantastic cook and a loving mother, Marie is the reason why women worldwide dislike mama’s boys. When things go wrong on the home front, Ray isn’t above comparing Debra to his mothe (more…)

Big Love: The Complete Second Season (2007)

Big Love: The Complete Second Season

Amazon.com

Early on in Big Love’s second season, closeted polygamist Bill Henrickson’s kids come to him with a broken toy. “I can fix anything,” he reassures them. If only his chaotic life were as easy to mend. Among the crises vying for his attention this season are finding out who was responsible for outing his wife, Barbara (Jeanne Tripplehorn), at the Mother of the Year ceremony; the investigation into the poisoning of his brother-in-law, Alby, for which he could be implicated in a cover-up; negotiating a deal to purchase a gaming company coveted by Roman (Harry Dean Stanton); and, in a “holy spirit sucker punch,” meeting Ana (Branca Katic), a Serbian waitress who just could be wife No. 4. A Golden Globe nominee for Best Drama, Big Love further draws viewers into the polygamists’ shadow world. “If they could show just one normal plural family for a change,” someone remarks at one point. Grounded in “the principle,” the Henrickson households are about as normal as yo (more…)

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Fourth Season (2002)

Curb Your Enthusiasm: The Complete Fourth Season

Amazon.com

He never learns. In the fourth season of his award-winning HBO comedy series, the quasi-fictional character of Larry David continues to say–and do–whatever he wants whenever he wants. In the first episode alone (“Mel’s Offer”), in which Mel Brooks offers him the role of Max Bialystock in The Producers, David offends a doctor, a lesbian couple, a wheelchair user, and Ben Stiller (by not shaking his hand after he sneezes). Then, in the second (“Ben’s Birthday Party”), he offends a blind man–by telling him his girlfriend’s not as hot as she claims–and pokes Stiller in the eye with a skewer while attempting to show agent Jeff Greene (Jeff Garlin) his new golf move. Larry continues to offend Stiller until he drops out of The Producers and, in the fifth episode (“The 5 Wood”), David Schwimmer (Friends) steps in. The following episode (“The Car Pool Lane”), in which David attends a Dodgers game–with a prostitute, so he can use the carpool lane–made history wh (more…)

Entourage: The Complete First Season (2004)

Entourage: The Complete First Season

Amazon.com

Entourage is everything viewers have come to expect from an HBO series: smart, hilarious, and highly addictive, especially when taken in full-season, DVD form. As implied in the title, the show follows Vincent Chase (Adrian Grenier), a rising Hollywood star with bedroom eyes and an over-active libido, along with his three childhood companions-turned-hangers-on. Kevin Dillon plays Johnny Drama, Vincent’s less-attractive, B-list actor of a brother (he is Matt Dillon’s less-attractive, B-list actor of a brother in real life). Jerry Ferrara plays Turtle, the weasel, and Kevin Connolly appears as Eric, the Everyman hero who hopes to parlay his friendship with Vincent (plus two years of community college) into a career in talent management. Along the way Eric contends with the predictable self-doubt, romantic indecision, etc. The cast is rounded out by Jeremy Piven (Doug Hughley from Singles) as a foul-mouthed agent reminiscent of Jay Mohr’s short-lived Peter Drago (more…)
