Greenberg [Blu-ray] (2010)

Greenberg [Blu-ray]

Amazon.com

Greenberg aims to recapture the raw flavor and psychological acuity of 1970s character portraits like Five Easy Pieces–but the character in question is completely of the moment. Neurotic and anxious Roger Greenberg (Ben Stiller) comes to L.A. to stay in his brother’s house, where he reconnects with old bandmates and falls, with painful awkwardness, into a relationship with his brother’s personal assistant, Florence Marr (Greta Gerwig, sweetheart of the “mumblecore” movement). But this movie is not about plot–it’s about human frailty and finding a moral or spiritual significance in caring for a dog or driving someone on an errand. Stiller sheds his usual bag of twitchy tricks and conveys the brittle spirit of a man defeated by his own intelligence. Gerwig has an odd, hapless charm; she makes aimlessness appealing. As a romance, the movie falters–while it’s obvious why Roger would be attracted to Florence’s youth and vulnerability, it’s less clear why Floren (more…)

U2 – PopMart Live from Mexico City (Limited Edition) (1997)

U2 - PopMart Live from Mexico City (Limited Edition)

Amazon.com

This stunning concert documentary sheds fresh light on U2′s controversial 1997 Popmart tour, the Irish rockers’ gaudy, epic trek in support of their electronica-edged Pop album. Mixed reactions to the pulsing, dance friendly music on Pop and disappointing ticket sales to stateside Popmart shows were interpreted as evidence that the band’s new sound and look were merely opportunistic. Yet one need only view Popmart Live alongside the Rolling Stones’ contemporaneous Bridges to Babylon 1998 long-form video to grasp U2′s underlying passion and conviction. While Popmart trumps the Stones (ringmasters of the original rock & roll circus and among the principal inventors of stadium rock) in terms of sheer scale, U2′s presentation still strikes thematic sparks missing from the Stones’ more conservative designs for the Bridges stage. With its vast, ramped stage and enveloping video backdrop, the Popmart set serves the band’s posttechno impulses, yet the music remain (more…)

Motion Picture Masterpieces Collection (David Copperfield 1935 / Marie Antoinette 1938 / Pride and Prejudice 1940 / A Tale of Two Cities 1935 / Treasure Island 1934)

For an accurate look at how things were at MGM in the glory days, go directly to Motion Picture Masterpieces, a DVD box with five literary-minded A-list productions. MGM liked to think of itself as the studio of class, and its highbrow aspirations (mixed with plenty of old-fashioned hokum) are on lavish display in this collection. Louis B. Mayer ran the studio, and boy wonder Irving Thalberg supervised production. However, another strong-willed producer, future Gone with the Wind CEO David O. Selznick, was responsible for guiding a pair of highly enjoyable Dickens adaptations, both released in 1935. David Copperfield is a wonderful condensation of the sprawling novel, crammed with memorable evocations of Dickens’ roster of eccentrics. Freddie Bartholomew, who became a star with this role, plays the young David; equally indelible are W.C. Fields as Mr. Micawber, Basil Rathbone as Murdstone, and especially Edna May Oliver as Besty Trotwood. Director George Cuk (more…)
